  5.     A few weeks before Congress is scheduled to debate renewal
  6. of China's most-favored-nation status, Beijing last week
  7. announced the release of 211 dissidents, jailed since last
  8. June's crackdown in Tiananmen Square. Congressional leaders,
  9. however, said they were unlikely to be swayed by the move.
  10. Senator Richard Lugar warned that there was "very considerable
  11. sentiment" to deny China the MFN status it has held since 1980.
  12. The impact of the prisoner release was also diluted by
  13. allegations from Xu Lin, a Chinese embassy official who defected
  14. two weeks ago. According to Xu, Beijing has been
  15. systematically harassing its expatriate students, warning them
  16. of jeopardy to their families and careers if they participate
  17. in antigovernment activities.
